FAQs
WHAt is a colonic?
A colonic, also known as colon hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation - is a gentle and effective way to cleanse the colon using warm, filtered water.
This soothing process helps release built-up waste, trapped gas, and toxins from the large intestine, supporting overall digestive health and a deeper sense of lightness and clarity.
At Flo, we use a closed system, which means the experience is completely discreet—no mess, no smell, and no need to push or strain. Throughout your session, your therapist will remain with you, offering gentle abdominal massage and intuitive care to support your comfort and results.
Warm, filtered water is introduced into the colon in a series of gentle cycles- called “fills” and “releases”- to encourage natural elimination. The pace is always tailored to your comfort.
To help you relax, we’re happy to play your favourite music or let our calming playlist softly set the tone. Whether you’d like to chat or prefer quiet time, this space is yours - to unwind, release, and reconnect with your body.
is a colonic safe?
Yes - a colonic is a safe and gentle practice when carried out by a qualified therapist using professional, sterile, or single-use equipment.
We always recommend consulting your healthcare provider before starting any new wellness or detox program, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions.
At Flo, your safety and comfort are our top priority.
We use a TGA-approved closed-system machine, known for its reliability and ease. The system operates at a very low pressure - never exceeding 2 PSI (for context, colonoscopies use around 8 PSI). If that threshold is approached, the machine automatically shuts off to ensure your complete safety.
The water used during your session is triple-filtered by the system and also externally filtered onsite before it ever reaches the unit - so you can feel confident in its purity.
Throughout the process, your therapist is there to support you every step of the way - making sure the experience feels calm, respectful, and completely aligned with your comfort.
does a colonic hurt?
Most people find colon hydrotherapy to be a comfortable and even relaxing experience.
You may feel a sense of fullness or mild cramping at times - similar to the sensation of a natural bowel movement - but the procedure should never be painful.
Your therapist is there to support you throughout, gently guiding the process and adjusting as needed to ensure your comfort. Open communication is always encouraged so we can personalise the session to suit your needs in the moment.
To prepare, we recommend staying well hydrated in the days leading up to your appointment. You’ll receive a simple guide with everything you need to know 48 hours before your session, so you can arrive feeling informed and at ease.
how long does a session take?
An initial appointment lasts about 90 minutes and includes a thorough consultation before the procedure. A return visit is typically 45 to 60 minutes, with follow-up support post-colonic.
how should i prepare for my first colonic?
In the 24–48 hours before your session, we recommend drinking plenty of water and keeping your meals light and nourishing.
Try to avoid heavy, greasy foods or alcohol, as these can place added strain on your digestive system.
Your therapist may offer personalised guidance based on your individual needs, but one thing we always suggest is to have some gentle, easy-to-digest meals ready for after your colonic. This way, you're not tempted to grab something quick that may not support your gut - and you’ll be continuing the healing benefits of your session with intention.
We also love to send you on your way with a warm cup of something soothing and nourishing - often a mineral-rich broth, a probiotic sip, or a hydrating drink with electrolytes - to support your body as it resets and rebalances.
how MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?
The ideal number of sessions depends on your personal goals and whether you’re currently receiving colonics.
We typically recommend starting with 3 to 5 sessions spaced closely together to allow for a deeper and more effective cleanse.
From there, many clients shift into a gentle maintenance plan, though the frequency varies from person to person. Each body responds differently, and your therapist will work closely with you to create a plan that feels aligned with your needs, lifestyle, and long-term wellness goals.
All recommendations are fully tailored and discussed with you throughout your journey.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A COLONIC?
Many clients report a wide range of positive effects following their sessions. These may include:
Relief from both acute and chronic constipation
Reduced bloating and gas
Improved digestion and more regular elimination
Increased energy and vitality
Clearer skin—may support conditions like eczema and psoriasis
Enhanced nutrient absorption
A greater sense of mental clarity and focus
Boosted creativity and emotional lightness
Hormonal balance support
Reduced anxiety, irritability, and stress
Support for detox and weight management programs
Better mood and improved emotional wellbeing
Relief from fatigue
Improved hydration of the colon, encouraging healthy peristalsis (your body’s natural bowel movement rhythm)
Please note: Results vary from person to person. Colon hydrotherapy is a complementary therapy and not a substitute for professional medical care.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OR RISKS?
Most clients leave their session feeling lighter, clearer, and more energised - often with a noticeable lift in mood and a reduction in brain fog.
However, as your body begins to release and process built-up toxins, some people may experience temporary effects such as mild fatigue, light-headedness, or gentle cramping. Occasionally, clients feel relaxed to the point of wanting a nap - this is a completely natural part of the detox process.
It’s important to remember that every body is different - responses can vary from person to person. With consistency, many find that their overall wellbeing improves significantly with each session.
When colon hydrotherapy is carried out professionally and with care, serious side effects are rare.
To ensure your safety, we ask that you share any existing medical conditions or medications with us before your session.
At Flo, your therapist is fully trained to guide you through the process with care and attention, helping you manage any detox symptoms that may arise so you feel supported every step of the way.
CAN ANYONE HAVE A COLONIC?
While colonics are safe for many people, there are certain conditions and medications that may make this therapy unsuitable.
These are known as contraindications, and it's important that we take them seriously to ensure your safety and wellbeing.
At Flo, your health is our top priority.
That’s why we review every intake form carefully. If anything arises that may be contraindicated, your therapist will reach out to discuss it with you before your appointment. You’ll never be left wondering - we’re here to support you with clarity, care, and transparency at every step.
CAN I EAT AFTER A COLONIC?
Yes, you can eat after your colonic - but we recommend keeping it light and nourishing.
A warm broth or stock is ideal (if suitable for you), as it’s gentle on the digestive system and helps replenish minerals. Light meals such as soups, smoothies, or simple salads are also great choices.
Since the colon has just been gently worked during your session, it’s best to avoid anything heavy, greasy, or highly processed. Giving your body time to ease back into digestion helps extend the benefits of your treatment and supports ongoing gut healing.
Think of your post-colonic meal as a continuation of the care you've just given yourself - simple, soothing, and supportive.
WILL YOU SEE MY POO?
Yes—but not in the way you might think!
During your session, waste flows gently through a closed system and passes through a small observation tube before moving straight into the sewer system. There’s no mess, no smell, and it’s all handled discreetly and professionally.
At Flo, we use this observation window as a helpful tool. It allows your therapist to get a sense of what’s happening in your colon, which can guide future sessions and help shape tailored product or lifestyle recommendations to support your gut health journey.
We believe it’s empowering to understand what your body is releasing—your waste holds valuable clues about your internal health. And honestly, seeing it this way is much more pleasant than peering into the toilet (though we encourage that at home too!).
Everyone poops. There’s no shame here—only care, support, and respect.
WILL YOU SEE MY BUM?
Yes, but only for a very brief moment at the very start of the procedure.
Your privacy and dignity are our top priorities, and you’ll be covered with a towel throughout the entire session. Honestly, how your bum looks is the last thing on our minds once the treatment begins.
With a nursing background, Louise has seen many bums - this part of the session is completely routine and unremarkable for us. It’s all about your comfort and care, not appearance.
At Flo, we want you to feel safe, calm, and supported from start to finish. As soon as the speculum is in place, our goal is for you to feel completely relaxed and ready to release - with your dignity fully intact.
WILL I LEAK AFTERWARDS?
After your session, you’ll have time to sit privately on the toilet and release any remaining water or waste at your own pace. This helps ensure you feel completely comfortable before you leave.
Once you’ve finished, you should be able to head home feeling confident and worry-free, without any unexpected leaks.
